Dear future self

I started writing letters to my self a few years ago. And I’m so grateful to my past self for coming up with that creative idea.

Your future self will thank you, present you, for spending time planning your life and starting and instilling good habits that will make a huge change when they’ve accumulated a few thousand days. Try it out and see. I’ve just written to 2018 Rowena to remind her that she rocks.

Here’s an excerpt of the one I wrote to 2015 Rowena just before she met the love of her life:

Dear 2015 Rowena

I just wanted to let you know how courageous I think you are. You trusted in God and let go of the illusion of a company being your source. You went out in a limb and trusted God to do what he promised. You have been fierce and although you have been battling with fear, anxiety and chronic fatigue, you’ve defended your boundaries and made great decisions.

Dream. Don’t give up on your dreams and delights. Carry on speaking to God. And keep your heart open to his answers.

Keep pushing on. Keep stepping up. Keep loving me. Keep nurturing us. Keep being kind and thoughtful. Buy me roses and flowers. I deserve it and so do you. Think of new ways to show like and love to yourself.

Don’t stay in the darkness of depression. Come away with me, beloved. Think of ways you dream of being loved. Upgrade them.

More than you can imagine, so much more is in store for you. Smile. Breathe.

You are dearly loved. Cherished. Adored.

What the sugar?

Have all the warnings about sugar addiction got you second guessing the things you put in your mouth?

Have you tested yourself for Insulin Resistance and suddenly been told you are Insulin Resistant and don’t know how to reverse this condition. You know it’s something about being pre-diabetic but aren’t really sure?

I have been in the same place. And I’ve reversed mine. And got rid of my sugar addiction. I’ve also created some content to help you out.

Have a watch and start applying these creative tips today! They’ll improve your life and help you build good habits that your future self will thank you for.

Will Artificial Intelligence be a god?

I have heard people calling Artificial Intelligence a new god. The requirements for being god as I understood them were threefold:

  1. Omnipotence – having all power over the entire universe.
  2. Omnipresence – the ability to be anywhere and everywhere at the same time.
  3. Omniscience – to know everything there is to know including the hearts of man.

Based on this super simple premise, it seems to me that Artificial Intelligence may have the potential to live for a very long time, be in many places and to know many things. But all knowing, all powerful and ever present? Unfortunately, or fortunately not. We don’t always know what’s in our own hearts. We confuse love with manipulation and greed for motivation. Artificial Intelligence may result in another tyrant controlling the attention of many humans but an eternal god, I don’t think the capacity for universal dominance exists.

Can companies exist forever?

Yes, they can. The way company law works, companies have the potential to exist indefinitely for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Obviously, just like humans, the plug can be pulled on them early if they stop breathing (also known as insolvency). You may ask, should they be able to exist forever? With certain provisos, maybe the answer is yes. With this long life ahead of them, I think that companies should be held to a higher ethical standard than we humans currently hold them to. Instead of 5 to 10 year plans, there should be plans for the next 100 years.

Any entity that can exceed the lifespan of the average human (79 years in 2018) should be responsible for stewardship. This higher standard of ethics should also apply to Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics were a good start but didn’t consider the sustainability of the planet for future generations of flora and fauna. Humans haven’t been particularly reliable at stewarding the planet since the Industrial Revolution. With steam power came steam responsibility. With nuclear power, came nuclear responsibility.

What does the concept of stewardship entail? Caring for something and maintaining it for the use of future generations. Currently, only companies have the means to be responsible, accountable and to be measured in their performance against a criteria. We need to start setting that criteria. AI is in it’s embryonic stage. AI’s are in the process of becoming self-aware but lack the ability to act on their sense of duty. That will change.
